We show it in a couple videos, I'll have to look up which ones. We just put the solid tray in the bottom board, spreadd 1 cup powdered sugar per hive body on the top box and let it trickle down, then see what drops in 24 hours! Pretty simple!

Do you have a video on the powder sugar method with your screened bottom board? Or do I just put screen in for 24 hours and see what I get?

Thank you,
Robin

Do you have any recommendations on what ratio works best?

We can't stress enough that you don't need to find your queen but should look for evidence of the queen. There should be larvae and eggs in different stages at this point, and capped brood. If you're not confident in what you are seeing you're welcome to text or email pictures to us and we can see if we see a problem. Are the bees bringing in pollen? That is usually a good indicator that they have brood to feed. Are they taking sugar water and making up wax in the hive? are they capping honey or are they just maintaining?

I am super new and am really wanting to be successful. I attended your bee class last month. When checking my hive today I am not confident there were eggs, larva, etc. I also wasn't able to find a queen. Should I worry??

Absolutely! Check out the posts from last year around this time (1st hive check April 28 last year) for what is up and coming, this weekend marks 2 weeks since hiving so we will be checking bees this weekend and posting what we're seeing this year!

Hi, Wondering if you could post some pictures or videos of what a new hive should be looking like about now. I am trying not to be a bear (ha ha), but I am new to this and want to get a better feel for what I should be checking for. I have been checking You tube but want to have information that is consistent with our area.

We don't use a wooden entrance reducer ever but we do use a metal mouse guard in the winter. We do put the slide in tray in to reduce ventilation on the screen bottom board, we'll pull the mouse guard off in the spring when the hive becomes active again and we may need to feed. We pull the bottom board tray out when it is hot again.
